What is meningitis?

Meningitis refers to inflammation of the meninges, the covering of the brain and spinal cord. It is usually caused by an infection with a virus, bacterium or a fungus. It can also be caused by chemical irritation, cancer and other conditions ¹.

What are the symptoms?

Meningitis can be difficult to diagnose because its most common symptoms – fever, headache, and muscle pain – may be similar to those of influenza (flu).Patients may have some or all of the symptoms, but not all at the same time.
